Hump Ridge Track

The Hump Ridge Track is a little piece of serious NZ magnificence. Tucked away in the very Deep South, this newest Great Walk is a hidden gem. Yes, the first day and the 2600 stairs are hard. Yes, the weather can be interesting. Yes, it’s a little tricky to get to. The rewards, however, are unparalleled and it has the advantage of being a bit quieter than some its more famous Great Walk colleagues. Beautiful scenery, fantastic remote huts and bits of history along the way. Seeing some Hector dolphins at Point Craig was the cherry on top. Not for the faint-hearted, perhaps, but utterly exceeds the effort involved and the Tuatapere sausages and porridge in the huts are a mouth-watering added bonus. 10 out of 10!

While this is a challenging track. The fact you don’t need to pack cooking equipment and can buy dehydrated meals, snacks and beer wine etc at lodges makes it much more manageable. You get a comfy bed and porridge for breakfast. Hiking in style. First day includes a steep climb but views or enchanted forest make it worth while. At the end of day two you may be lucky enough to see or swim with hectors dolphins. Lodges and hosts are great with options to upgrade to own room. Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 days of hiking.

I did the guided walk last weekend and highly recommend it. The walk itself is amazing and so diverse. Loved the bush, the spectacular views, the beaches. Even saw Hector Dolphins. Our guides Dallas and Ant were great! True southern hospitality and they really looked after us. They were very knowledgeable about the environment as well.

Scenery divine and staff magnificent, loved it all. NZ knows how to do tourism properly, food, grog and service all amazing. Thanks for looking after us so well and say hello to Liz and Forest.
