Formed by Fire, Stilled by Water

Lake Taupō, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, sits at the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. It fills the caldera of a supervolcano that last erupted around 1,800 years ago in one of the most violent volcanic events in historic records (Roman and Chinese). The resulting lake stretches over 600 square kilometres, creating a vast, serene expanse of blue that belies the volatility that shaped it. 

The immense Taupō eruption blanketed much of the North Island in volcanic ash, and incredibly, altered weather patterns globally. Today, its volcanic origins are hinted at by the steaming vents and hot springs scattered throughout the area. Geothermal wonders include the Craters of the Moon and natural hot rivers you can soak in. The nearby Huka Falls where the icy-blue Waikato River thunders down, one of the highest-volume waterfalls in the world.

Taupō’s somewhat suburban township has a laid-back, welcoming vibe. Situated at lakeside, check out the waterfront cafés, boutique shops, classic pubs, and an impressive array of eateries. 

Activities in Every Direction

Very much a domestic tourism town and a hub for outdoor activities, Taupo boasts some of the best trout fishing in the world. The lake is renowned for its abundant rainbow and brown trout, introduced in the late 19th century and now self-sustaining. Fishing enthusiasts from around the globe come to test their skills. The lake’s shores are perfect for boating, swimming, and kayaking, while the surrounding forests offer leisurely hikes and mountain biking trails, including the popular Great Lake Trail, which winds along the lake’s periphery.

For those keen on exploring beyond the water, Tongariro National Park lies just over an hour's drive south. The volcanic domes of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe, and Ruapehu rise skywards beyond the foot of the lake, beckoning adventurers. Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the 3-day Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk, or some of the best short-walks in the country.
