Over half of New Zealand's native plant species and 80% of all alpine species call the Kahurangi National Park home. The great spotted kiwi and the endangered giant nocturnal carnivorous land snail can both be seen in the park – if you are lucky!
Famous for the Heaphy Track - a historic track blazed by early gold miners following routes likely used earlier by Maori on their way to the West Coast for pounamu (Greenstone). Today the Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks. This track is open to mountain bikers from the 1st of May through to the 30th of September.
