Ōtautahi, the Māori name for Christchurch, is known as the 'Garden City' and is the main international arrival point for the South Island, as well as being its largest city. Located on the good-weather side of the Alps on the Canterbury Plains, this rugby mad city has continually reinvented itself, especially in the wake of the recent devastating earthquakes that levelled this city, reshaping its landscape and identity.
Here is a place where the resilience of nature and human spirit coexist. The earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 left an indelible mark on Christchurch, toppling historic buildings and altering the city's skyline. Yet, out of the rubble, a new city has emerged - one that is embracing innovation and sustainability. The city’s rebuild has become a symbol of renewal, blending modern architecture with green spaces, and transforming former disaster zones into vibrant community hubs. There were a lot of tough conversations about what to keep and what to lose.
Hagley Park, almost in the heart of the city, has endured and offers contrast to the urban bustle. Picture sprawling lawns and ancient trees with the tranquil Avon River winding through. Within the park, the Botanic Gardens have flora from around the world (a mini Kew-like Gardens) and are a testament to Christchurch’s long-standing association with horticulture and silviculture.
Behind Christchurch (and further east) the Port Hills (500m) rise dramatically from the plains, with views over the Canterbury Plains and beyond to the distant Southern Alps. These grassland hills are the rims of ancient and extinct volcanic craters, and are criss-crossed with public walking and biking trails.
Christchurch also serves as a springboard for exploring the wider Canterbury region. The nearby Southern Alps, the mountainous spine of the South Island, are just a short drive away. Adventure seekers can easily venture into the foothills for hiking, skiing, and soaking in the breathtaking landscapes. Whether it's a day trip to Arthur's Pass or a sojourn to the serene shores of Akaroa, Christchurch is ideally positioned as a gateway to some of New Zealand's best outdoor experiences.
